In 2006, Christophe Chapillon decides to follow the family adventure (his uncle was oenologue in the Loire) of wine making but not in the Loire Valley but in Spain and specifically in Aragon where he lives since 1986 with the help of Cesar Langa. Through this collaboration with the oldest Calatayud (More than 150 years of history) familiar Bodega, launches its brand CHAPILLON that becomes the backbone of their new business project.
Christophe creates a line of wine with their familial name:
CHAPILLON. A line of modern and wines, very different wines from the area.
Our main purpose is to select the right grape variety for each plot, depending on the terroir’s characteristics and constraints. The vineyard is handling by our friends Cesar & Juan Langa and it is conducted in sustainable agriculture. Manual harvests allow us to sort and retain the best grapes, which are then vinified and blended in our wines.
The vines have an average age of 35 years (oldest around 85 years) and are closely planted, with densities of 2500 to 3500 vines per hectare; altitude between 750/950 Meter above the sea level. The vines have developed substantial root systems, enabling them to draw nutrients from deep in the soil, and to cope with the sometimes difficult weather conditions, such as when there are droughts in the summer. Low rainfall during the year around 250 Liters per sqm.
The vineyard is planted with the Calatayud traditional grape variety, GARNACHA, but also Petit Verdot, Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah for our Red wines and Chardonnay & Macabeo for our Craft Premium Cava, also White Garnacha.
