Recuero & Co produces wines in the ancient territories of Guzquía in Toledo and in the Sierra de Gata in Extremadura. Since its founding, its objective has been to showcase and share wines designed for the enjoyment of wine lovers—unique wines that until recently were reserved for ourselves, just as our grandparents did with their finest vineyards and wines.
CALAMBUR INDIGENOUS VARIETIES OF GUZQUðA
In the ancient territories of Guzquía (Toledo-Cuenca), we produce Calambur wines, practicing organic, sustainable, and environmentally conscious viticulture. This involves minimal intervention in the vineyard, and subsequently in the winemaking process, allowing us to create wines that reflect the identity and authenticity of their plots and terroirs. There, in Villanueva de Alcardete, stands the Recuero family winery, established in 1873. This wine-growing region bears a strong monastic influence due to its proximity to the Monastery of Uclés, at an average altitude of 840 meters. We work with vineyards planted on their own rootstock in sandy, clay, calcareous and mixed soils, some of them centuries old, with indigenous red grapes such as Moravia or Brujidera, Tinta Velasco, the local Tinta Fina (Tinta Madrid) or the different Garnachas, as well as maligned white grapes that, when made in a traditional way, can teach us wines of great personality, such as Airén del País, the local variety Verdoncho (Gordal or Grape of the Shepherd) or Pardillo (Albillo Pardo), hardly known even in this environment.
ANTIER HISTORIC VINEYARDS OF SIERRA DE GATA
On the other hand, there are the Antier wines in the Sierra de Gata (north of Cáceres, bordering Portugal). In Villamiel, the highest village (800-900 m.) in this Extremaduran mountain range, we practice mountain viticulture with cover crops. Why had we returned and started anew to bring light to its forgotten small plots enclosed by stone walls, its old vineyards with blue granite soils where Piñuelo, Rufete, and Ojo de Liebre grapes stand out, as well as Verdejo Serrana and various Garnacha varieties.
