Rioja Alavesa has always been recognized as the origin of the most elegant and and long-lived Riojas. Rioja Alavesa wines are typically fresh, perfumed and precise, with muscular but fine tannins.
Rioja Alavesa represents about 20% of the vineyard surface of Rioja (13.000 of 65.000 has.) Alavesa is the highest subzone of Rioja, North of the Ebro river. The Sierra Cantabria offers protection against wind, and the cooler more humid weather patterns from the North. It has a high proportion of historic vineyards, with an average age in our vineyards of more than 50 years, mostly planted on hillside terraces. The soils of Rioja Alavesa and the Sonsierra also distinguish the area from the rest of Rioja.
Over 90% of grapes are red, 97% of which is Tempranillo, but with diverse clonal material. Rioja Alavesa is without doubt the benchmark for this noble variety. Of the 10% of white grapes, 90% is Viura, with exceptional quality potential. It is common for Tempranillo to be planted on the hillsides (laderas) and the Viura on the hilltops (cabezadas).
Our 300 plots are are in the most important villages and sites in Rioja Alavesa. The proximity of the vineyards to the Sierra Cantabria Mountain range and the river Ebro is a fundamental factor that determines the personality of each village in Rioja Alavesa.
