It all started with Ed Belfour’s grandparents making moonshine on their farm in Saskatchewan. The art deco aesthetic of that time would later inspire the packaging and bottle design for Belfour Spirits.
After Ed Belfour retired from his hall-of-fame hockey career in 2009, he wasn’t content being idle. His son, Dayn, was also looking for a career change and had researched the spirits industry. Ed’s endless pursuit of his second career began.
Ed balked at slapping his name on a cheap label on a cheap bottle of cheap whiskey. The Belfours all agreed they wanted to put their family name on something they created themselves, which led to learning all things whiskey
Ed and Dayn attended two distilling schools: Moonshine University in Louisville, Kentucky, and Canadian Craft Distilling Institute in West Kelowna, British Columbia.
Dayn learned the distilling process first-hand during an internship in Colorado. There he made Belfour Spirits’ first 12 barrels, resulting in our Limited Edition Straight Rye Whiskey.
Ed’s daughter, Reaghan, joins the company to help prepare for the products’ launch. Since its launch, Belfour Spirits has been expanding into new markets and earning top awards for packaging and flavor.
