The family winery project was started by José Alberto López, in 2007, when he planted his first vines in the Guadalupe ravine, in the town of Francisco Zarco. The first grapes would be harvested in 2010.

In 2012, his son Santiago López joined the project, who from that moment on works as winemaker for the winery, after obtaining a diploma in Viticulture from the University of California, Davis. The prizes begin to arrive, after obtaining two of his first wines, two medals. In this way, the concept of Premium Quality wines that we seek to achieve at Solar Fortún is reaffirmed.

The basis of the project is to seek the highest quality in each of the stages of wine production, starting with the quality of the grapes. 100% of Solar Fortún's vines come from the French Mercier nursery, which is located in the Napa Valley, in the heart of California's wine country. The patterns, strains and clones of the plants were specially selected for their microclimate, that is, taking into consideration the characteristics of the subsoil and the climate of the canyon.
Additionally, the ravine has excellent quality water, with very low amounts of mineral salts, and there is great care in providing precise care to the vineyard, in all its stages of development. This guarantees the best quality in the fruit that is processed year after year.

O Positivo

  • Founded: 2010 by the López family
  • Winery location: The winery and its vineyards are located at the very northern end of Valle de Guadalupe on a unique stretch of land where the valley narrows almost into a canyon. The steep valley walls provide thermoregulation that make this site completely different than any in the valley. The pronounced floral elements and fresh high acidity of their wines are largely thanks to these unique attributes of their microclimate.
  • Region and grape source: All grapes are estate grown in Valle de Guadalupe approximately 18 miles from the Pacific. They currently have 18.5 acres under vine.
  • Annual production: 3,000 cases
  • Number of wines made: 8
  • Vineyard location, elevation and grape varieties:
    • Valle de Guadalupe - 1,000 ft - estate vines - (Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre, Syrah). the site is dominated by sandy soils with a small amount of clay.
  • Winemaker: enologist Santiago López Viana (Mexican born, trained at UC Davis, lives in Valle de Guadalupe)
  • Their "O Positivo", (Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah) appears on the prestigious wine list of the three Michelin stars French Laundry.
