Our Furmint is grown in Tokaj, nestled by three volcanoes near the Carpathian Mountains at 1,499 ft above sea level. In 1737 Tokaj was declared the first wine appellation in the world and since 2002 Tokaj is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the best terroirs in Tokaj are selected for this Furmint. The soils, of volcanic and sedimentary rock origin, contain a significant amount of gold!
Farming is sustainable, as defined by the Council of Tokaj Wine. The average age of the vines is 30 years, low & middle head trained. The soil cover is maintained with annual plowing. Harvest starts in the second half of September and is done completely by hand in small crates.
The grapes are pressed with a traditional ’Kossuth’ pressing machine. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks for 10 - 12 days and the wine is kept in contact with the lees for at least 4 months. The wine is allowed to settle naturally by gravity and is only minimally fined or filtered.
Winemaker Györk Firmanszky is also a singer in his free time. His songs come across as very local, being about the life and beauty of Tokaj, as does his wine!
Spatzi dry Furmint is fresh, complex, elegant and balanced with zesty citrus fruit aromas. It’s great with pasta or meat dishes like creamy salmon pasta or crispy roast pork tenderloin served with mushroom sauce and apple. Cheers! Egészségedre!
